This publication is designed to fill a perceived void in the market, as there are currently no other publications dealing with only “modern” preserved UK heritage traction. However, the use of the terms “modern” and “preserved” have become less clear in recent years. This book details diesel locomotives built as early as 1919, which can hardly be described as “modern”. Also included in the book are preserved electric locomotives, first and second generation diesel multiple units (DMUs) and electric multiple units (EMUs).

The book also includes contact numbers and website details of the various UK preserved railways, together with a stock list of locomotives, DMUs and EMUs found at each location, together with a distance table where appropriate.
