Locomotive
No. 127 failed at Booterstown whilst on route to Bray while
operating in multiple with locomotive No. 135. Locomotive
No. 135 managed to continue forward with the train as far as
Bray with No. 127 dead. Locomotive No. 081 was then sent
light engine to Bray to haul the train back to Islandbridge
Junction, where it was replaced by locomotives Nos. 123 +
133. However, locomotives Nos. 123 + 133 were also not in
the best of health, suffering from low power, and were
loosing time all the way towards Westport.
So much
time was lost on the outward journey that engineers, who
were waiting to take possession of the line between
Claremorris and Westport in order to replace a bridge, had
decided to start work. As such the railtour had to be
terminated at Claremorris, omitting the section between
Claremorris and Westport. In the meantime, Iarnród Éireann
sent locomotive No. 073 to Athlone to replace the ailing 121
class locomotives on their return. Unfortunately, more time
was lost on the return journey, which meant that the section
between Athlone and Galway also had to be omitted from the
itinerary. The two 121 class locomotives were replaced at
Athlone, with the railtour returning directly to Dublin
behind locomotive No. 073.
The train
was formed of Iarnród Éireann Cravens coaches.
