Tour Review

Leaving Dublin Connolly the train lost all internal power due to a defective train lighting cable between two of the coaches. In addition, there was no heat on the train as the steam heating boiler has also just failed. The railtour was then delayed in platform 10 at Dublin Heuston (Islandbridge Jnc) on the outward journey awaiting fitters’ attention. Further time was lost approaching Ballyhaunis when the vacuum brake hose between the trailing locomotive and the first coach parted, bringing the train to a halt. Also, the train was stopped near Foxford due to a level crossing being closed. As a result of all these delays, the section between Claremorris and Westport had to be omitted from the itinerary, the train returning directly to Dublin from Ballina.

The train was formed of Iarnród Éireann Cravens coaches.

162 & 160 at Ballina. Gary Blyth.

160 + 162 at Ballina. Kileen O'Donohoe.

145 & 153 at Claremorris. Gary Blyth.

145 + 153 Claremorris. Bernard Richardson.
