The
railtour departed Belfast Central on time with locomotive
No. 111 hauling Gatwick coaches Nos. 8946 + 8945 + 8941 +
8942 + Generator Van No. 8911 for the first leg of the
railtour to Dublin Connolly and back again to Belfast
Central. At Belfast Central there was a cross platform
connection into the four-piece “80”80 class set formed of
vehicles Nos. 8089 + 8733 + 8738 + 8069. The railcar set
then operated the Belfast Central to Ballymena (via Bleach
Green Junction), Ballymena to Lisburn (via Antrim) and
Lisburn to Whitehead RPSI platform as booked. At Whitehead,
the railtour participants were given an escorted tour around
the RPSI’s depot.
The “80”80
class railcar set then departed Whitehead RPSI platform on
time at 15:35, but only managed to get as far as Whitehead
NIR station where it was declared a total failure after the
brakes seized on in power car No. 8089. Passengers were then
asked to disembark from the train and transfer over to the
opposite platform to await a replacement railcar set to
arrive. The set concerned was “8”450 Castle class set Nos.
8455 + 8795 + 8785, which had been laying over at
Carrickfergus station waiting to operate the 16:30
Carrickfergus to Belfast Central service. This set ran empty
to Whitehead to pick up the railtour passengers, and then
ran non-stop back to Carrickfergus to resume its booked
working to Belfast Central, albeit running late. At Belfast
Central railtour passengers transferred back onto the
Gatwick set, again hauled by locomotive No. 111, for the
final leg of the railtour to Dublin Connolly and back again
to Belfast Central. The train departed Belfast Central
approximately 30 minutes late, but arrived only around 15
minutes late at Dublin Connolly.
