124 lives

June 15, 2025
Just seven days after 190's startup, our volunteers turned their attention turned to our preserved 121 class loco, 124, on Saturday 14th June. The 121 class were the GM locomotives exported to Europe back in 1960, and so 124 is very historically important and her first start up in preservation has been much anticipated by volunteers and enthusiasts.

After a day shunting and hours of working at various faults, including a defective water pump, fabricating a new battery box for one side and installing a refurbished set of batteries, Norman 'went for the start', and, as you can see below, it worked. We think that the video speaks for itself...

As with 190, there is a lot more work to be done (including bodyside attention), but this is another small step forward for our efforts in Irish railway preservation. This is the first time that this 121 class loco has been started since August 2008.
