Two diesel locomotives

Diesel Day returns to Downpatrick this summer

After an absence of over two years due to the catastrophic flood damage to the Downpatrick & County Down Railway in November 2023, it is with great pleasure that we can announce that our locomotives will once again take part in a diesel locomotive running day on Saturday 23rd August 2025.

Enjoy haulage behind our classic Irish diesel locomotives

Our heritage diesel locomotives Nos.A39r and 146 will be out and about hauling trains between Downpatrick and Inch Abbey, supplemented by DCDR’s 450 class ‘Thumper” railcar set No.458 “Antrim Castle”.

In addition, one of our G class locomotives will be giving cab rides in the yard. There may even be some other treats in store too…

The event runs from 12:00 to 16:00, and tickets are now on sale on the Downpatrick & County Down Railway’s website.

For participants travelling from Dublin, Táilte Tours are operating a bus connection from Connolly Luas stop.

We’re very excited about our return to diesel locomotive passenger operations and hope to see many of you this August.
